What We’ve Learned in 10 Years

This past weekend, I ran into a family at the Monterey Bay FC soccer game — a family we’ve had the privilege of supporting for the past fourteen years, starting when Partnership for Children was a very small program of another organization.

They were one of my first.

Seeing them there, in such a normal, joyful moment, stopped me in my tracks. It brought back so many memories of where their journey began, what they’ve navigated, and how far they’ve come. Their daughter, and their entire family, played a significant role in shaping the path forward, and ultimately, in my decision to continue this work and establish Partnership for Children as an independent nonprofit.

That moment has stayed with me.

As we celebrate ten years of service as an independent nonprofit this year, it’s moments like these that have me reflecting not just on how much we’ve grown, but on what we’ve learned along the way.

Families don’t just need services — they need consistency

Families navigating serious illness are often juggling more than most of us can imagine — medical appointments, financial strain, emotional stress, and constant uncertainty.

Support isn’t just about showing up once. It’s about showing up again and again.

It’s the familiar voice checking in.
The monthly grocery deliveries they can count on.
The driver that shows up at the door and is there for the whole trip, door-to-door.
The reliability of knowing someone is there, not just in crisis, but throughout the journey.

Consistency builds trust. And trust is where real support begins.

Transportation is more than a ride — it’s access to care

One of the biggest barriers families face is simply getting to where care exists.

For the families we serve, children’s hospitals are hours away. A single appointment can mean a full day of travel, or more. Without reliable transportation, appointments are delayed or missed, and care is disrupted.

We’ve learned that transportation isn’t just a logistical need — it’s a critical link to treatment, stability, and hope.

Every ride, every gas card, every mile traveled is part of a much bigger picture: making sure a child gets the care they need, when they need it.

Trust is built in the small moments

It’s easy to think impact comes from the big things — and sometimes it does.

But more often, it’s the small moments that matter most.

A birthday card in the mail.
A conversation during a delivery.
A moment of laughter at a holiday event.

These are the moments where relationships are formed. Where families feel seen, not just served.

Over time, those small moments become the foundation for something much bigger: a trusted connection that families can rely on.

Every act of support carries dignity, care, and connection

Whether it’s helping with rent, delivering groceries, providing diapers, or coordinating transportation, each service is more than just assistance.

It’s a message.

A message that families are not alone.
That their challenges are seen.
That their community is standing beside them.

We’ve learned that how we provide support matters just as much as what we provide.

Looking Ahead

Ten years in, we’re still learning. Still growing. Still listening.

What hasn’t changed is our commitment to meeting families where they’re at — with compassion, consistency, and care.

To every family who has trusted us, every partner who has walked alongside us, and every supporter who has made this work possible: thank you for being part of these first ten years.

We’re just getting started.

And for me, it all comes back to moments like that soccer game — a reminder of why this work matters, and why it always will.
